The Brightest of Nights
"Nice place," Toni said as they approached the cabin. "How'd you afford it?"
Carl gave her a sideways look at that. He felt a little insulted at her estimation of capabilities. What made it worse was that she was right.
"Shelly and Kevin lent me the money," he admitted.
She smiled at that, which irritated him. "You're moving up in the world," she said. Her next words belied the playful smirk. "This is much nicer than the place you brought me to."
His heart sank at that. It was only a month ago. He couldn't even imagine now how it had seemed like a good idea. She knew the surest way to hurt him: remind him of how much he'd hurt her. Not that he didn't deserve it. He stopped the car in the large gravel circle in front of the lodge. It was actually nicer than the ad had made it look. Leaving the bags in the car, he walked up the three steps of the front porch. She followed after him, carrying the smallest of the bags she'd brought. He fished the key out of his front pocket and fitted it to the door, sliding open the deadbolt. He opened both of the double doors and stepped back, holding the door open for Toni.
"Fuck," she said in admiration of the place. A huge kitchen and a rustic wooden table easily large enough for a dozen people greeted them as they entered. Two open doorways led from the dining room to the immense central chamber to which three bedrooms and a bathroom connected directly.
"This place is perfect," Toni said, looking around. The complete back wall was composed of large picture windows looking out over the back deck and a hillside sloping gently upward into ample woodland beyond. Those woods, and the fact that their next neighbor was over a mile away, had been what sold him on the place. That, and the fact that Shelly had offered to pay for the place for the
weekend as well as cover the deposit. It apparently belonged to some family friend of hers.
Shelly had repeated though, that they still had other plans and wouldn't be joining them that weekend. Carl wondered what they'd be doing instead. She still wouldn't say. He was just as happy to not be involved.
"Holy crap, is there a hot tub?" Toni looked out the back windows then slid the door open to step out onto the wooden deck. Carl hurried to catch up to her, still trying to decide what to do about the rooms. Three bedrooms, and three couches, four if you counted the little short one near the front door. Room easily for half a dozen people to sleep.
He caught up to her outside. He could see why it was so expensive. A covered charcoal grill sat on the deck near the hot tub. A small building offset from the house held a shower and a changing room with a large stack of towels. He wondered why,
